Chapter Nine

“Hold up,” I said as I grabbed Chantara and Rumi by the hand. “What are you doing?”

Chantara looked around at me with glazed eyes, and she blinked slowly like she was just waking up from a nap.

“I’m… not sure,” she replied with a frown.

Rumi also wore a confused expression, but she quickly regained composure and turned her back to the mermaids.

“Shouldn’t we have a think about this, before we go wandering over to a bunch of potential threats?” I tried to talk some sense into them both as they seemed drawn to these half-fish women like they were old friends. “I thought neither of you knew these merfolk?”

“I don’t,” Rumi said, but she sounded uncertain.

“Me, neither,” Chantara agreed before she shook her head. “I don’t know why, but I just felt like they were safe to go and talk to.”

That felt wrong to me. Both of my strong, smart, capable women had suddenly decided these merfolk were friendly, but I hadn’t had the same reaction. I wasn’t sure merfolk was the right term, either, since there wasn’t a single man in the group.

I decided the more distance I could put between us and the mermaids for now, the better, so I ushered Chantara and Rumi back toward the trees.

“It looks like it’s just mermaids here,” I voiced my observation to the women.

“Huh…” Chantara said thoughtfully, and she gazed up to the left, like she was trying to access a deeply buried memory.

“What are you thinking?” I asked.

“I’m sure I heard of something like this as a girl.” She paused and scrunched her nose. It looked like she was having a hard time accessing the information. “Yes, I’m sure of it. There was a rumor, years and years ago, that some of the mermaids had enough of the men folk and all their drama and fighting. So, they just left, and a big group of them abandoned all the other clans and made their own colony of women. I always thought it sounded like a great idea when I was a young girl.”

“Whoa, hang on a second, sugar.” Rumi’s mouth fell open as Chantara’s story jogged her own recollection. “I heard that, too! The women had wanted to leave behind the silly men and live a life of peace. I thought it was fantastic, leave those daft men to their own stupid plans… no offense, handsome.”

“Oh, yeah, don’t mind me, just an overdramatic daft man here.” I laughed and rolled my eyes. “So, you two reckon these women are all about peace then?”

“Yeah.” Chantara nodded. “Well, that’s if the rumors are true. It’s been a long time since I heard them, so it could all be jalapody shit. Who knows what’s happened since. They seem friendly enough, though.”

“I get a good feeling from them,” Rumi said with a wistful smile.

“I’m not convinced,” I admitted. “Did either of you hear a weird sound in the waves before?”

Both of them shot me a quizzical look, so I was on my own with the melody, I guessed.
